Made in India, Healed in India: India’s Medtech Revolution

The sector of medical technology in India is currently undergoing an important change, as stated by PM Modi. He pointed out that the med tech industry in India is getting stronger due to local production, decreasing reliance on imports, and consistent government support.

Traditionally, the Indian market has been relying significantly on foreign medical devices and equipment, from diagnostic devices to surgical instruments, which led to higher costs of health services and supply instability.

Domestic manufacturing, therefore, is an effort to bridge the gap, reduce the cost of hospitals and patients, and make the healthcare supply chain more robust. This approach aligns with the “Make in India” and self-reliance policies of India, which have proven success stories in sectors such as electronics and defense manufacturing.

 In the medtech domain, increased local capacity can translate to cheaper diagnostic and treatment devices being made available in secondary and rural cities, which have been a hindrance to modern healthcare due to cost factors.
