HURL Powers Grassroots CSR in Uttar Pradesh

Executive Summary

HURL is advancing grassroots CSR in Uttar Pradesh through initiatives such as LED high mast lighting in Deoria and open gyms in Kushinagar. The projects aim to improve community safety, accessibility and health while strengthening HURL’s engagement with the regions where it operates.

The fertiliser public sector undertaking Hindustan Urvarak & Rasayan Limited (HURL) is an entity established for the purpose of reviving inactive urea manufacturing units and developing India’s indigenous capacity of fertiliser production.

The company is doing so through a number of socially-oriented CSR activities in the state of Uttar Pradesh, wherein it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding to provide LED high mast lights in Deoria district and develop open gyms in Kushinagar.

Even though these CSR initiatives do not enjoy the same status and scale as some big infrastructure deals, these are precisely the type of activities which CSR budgets are supposed to facilitate- street lighting to cut down accident rates and make the area safer, free access to exercise facilities for the benefit of community health.

As far as a firm focused primarily on its industrial activity, the revival of its fertilizer production capacity to cut down import dependency goes, such an approach reveals the company’s attention to the very places where it operates. Deoria and Kushinagar – the cities in the east of Uttar Pradesh – are areas where there has been traditionally less infrastructure developed than in more urbanized parts of the state.
